Our History

Guild Electrical was formed in 1979 and 9 years later Ray (Guild) teamed up with Winston (Spence) to form Guild & Spence Electrical – Ray running Tauranga work and Winston running Mount Maunganui work, with a staff level of approx 10. In 1998 the 10th Avenue premises were no longer suitable and Ray moved into 11 St John Street, where the Tauranga Branch remains today. In 1997 the Mount Maunganui branch was opened in Hewletts Road. By 2003 the Hewletts Road premises was no longer suitable and the Mount Maunganui branch was then moved to Hull Road, where it is still situated.

Winston decided it was time to sell his share of the electrical services company to be closer to his family in Australia. These shares were sold to long serving staff members, creating the foundation of what is to become Guild & Spence Electrical Ltds future recipe for success. Over the following years shares are sold to other long serving, full-time staff members, with a vested interesting in growing and improving the company.

Ray had the vision in 1999 to create a new Technologies division specialising in data, nurse call systems, security and access control. This division has grown tremendously over the years and continues to be a success.

In 2008 Guild & Spence Heat Pumps was formed in conjunction with ESP Whakatane, which then became solely owned by Guild & Spence to become Guild & Spence Heatpumps Ltd. A branch in Hamilton was also opened in 2008 to serve our customers in the Waikato and Auckland areas.

The staff levels in 2010 are now at approximately 60 full time staff, 18 of which have worked for the company for 10 years or more. There are up to 45 vehicles on the road at any one time.
